About the Community Planning Committee 

The Community Planning Committee (CPC) is the main source of community input, ownership and organizing for WKI programs and projects. It will be populated by members of Tennessee’s AI/AN community including diverse tribal affiliations, citizens of federally recognized nations, members of state-recognized tribes, and un-enrolled remnant and migratory individuals who identify as American Indian/Alaska Native.

Function

Identifies, tests demands for and organizes projects and project teams to address needs of Tennessee’s AI/AN community.

Member Requirements, Term Length, Term Limits

  • Demonstrated commitment to service beneficial to American Indians/Alaska Natives regardless of legal (political) status, especially those residing in Tennessee
  • Demonstrated cultural affiliation, cultural knowledge and active in statewide or local AI/AN communities or organizations
  • Demonstrated leadership skills or qualities
  • Must be a permanent legal residents of Tennessee
  • Term: TBD

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Committee: Participate in committee meetings, annual meetings, scheduled electronic meetings and special events, training and development opportunities as identified and funds are available
  • Community: Surveys or counsels with community, board and executive committee to identify needs and demands for potential new programs and services. Interprets and represents the community to the rest of the organization
  • Program: Makes recommendations to the board as new projects or programs are identified. Reviews and approves literacy and other educational curriculum models for cultural appropriateness and suitability to intended use. 
  • Project Teams:  Seeks volunteers for project teams. Makes sure each project team has a chair, and stays in touch with chairs to be sure that their work is carried out.
  • Executive Committee: Notifies appropriate Executive Committee members of management and administrative issues or needs.
  • Board: Identifies committee recommendations that should be presented to the full board. CPC Chair serves as non-voting ex-officio member of WKI Board of Directors
  • Organization: Interprets and represents the organization to the community. Stays informed and abreast of the organization’s mission, services, policies, and programs, as well as development’s in the organization’s field

Candidate Qualifications

  • Embraces the mission, vision and values of the organization, especially as related to existing and potential programs and projects
  • Has ability to listen, analyze, think clearly and creatively, work well with people individually and in a group.
  • Is willing to prepare for and attend board and committee meetings, ask questions, take responsibility and follow through on a given assignment, contribute to fundraising efforts, open doors in the community, self-evaluate as needed
  • Is willing to further develop existing skills and develop new skills as needed or warranted including skills needed to cultivate and solicit funds, cultivate and recruit volunteers, partners and other participants, prepare and present financial statements and other reports, give public presentation on organization and its programs and projects.
  • Possesses honesty, sensitivity to and tolerance of differing views, a friendly, responsive, and patient approach, community-building skills, personal integrity, a developed sense of values, concern for your nonprofit's development, a sense of humor.
  • Willingness to inform others about the organization and its goals and programs
